Spotlight On...The Flower Appreciation Society

Today we're kicking off a new weekly feature, singing the praises of the suppliers we love and know you will too.

Without further a-do, please welcome Ellie & Anna of 'The Flower Appreciation Society' ("not your average florists")...

Based in Hackney, designer-florists Ellie and Anna love nothing more than thinking outside the box and indulging in the quirk factor:

"The moment we met we recognised our shared love of flowers. The seed was sown for The Flower Appreciation Society. Our background is illustration and textile design. This visual training informs our beautiful, natural and sometimes quirky arrangements. We use English, seasonal flowers and masses of wild foliage where possible."

Anna and Ellie use their design skills to illustrate to their clients the type of flowers they plan to use. This is a great way for the not-so-flower-savvy to better visualise their wedding flowers.

Reflections of 2011

Wow. It's hard to believe how quickly this year has flown by (doesn't it always?) and what an epic year it's been for us at Grant-Riley HQ. Here's some of the highlights...

The Intern
Trying to juggle full time motherhood with full time wedding planning was proving to be a total nightmare. Wedding season was about to hit and I knew I couldn't do it alone. Cue Charlie...

In short, she was our life saver. She helped me keep my head when it was all getting a bit much (and saved Rob from the onslaught of female wrath). She turned up every day for several months without fail, ran errands, kept me going with macarons, and best of all she was my right hand girl at all our weddings this year. This was also the year she graduated and became a proper grown-up. It goes without saying that you are an utter gem Charlie Batchelor, and we wish you all the best in your new job in 2012.

The Newbies

He's technically not a newbie as he's been with me on this rollercoaster journey from day one, but more of a behind the scenes kind of guy. So back in September, the husband decided it was time to step up and take a more active role in Grant-Riley Weddings. He deals with the day-to-day boring technical stuff generally (he builds and maintains our beautiful website amongst other things) and is my sounding board. We also recognised that the grooms need a guy's perspective from time to time, as much as I try to do both, so Rob has and will continue to support our grooms in future should they need him.

Harriet! Joining us at the end of the summer, her design and styling skills are second to none. Did you know she's in charge of styling London's Anthropologie stores? Yep. We only work with the best ;-) If you're an industry pro you may have met her already, but if you're one of our couples (or would like to be) then you'll get to say hello next year. Harriet has also started writing weekly inspiration pieces for the blog so be sure to check them out. I cannot WAIT to shake it up with you next year lady!

My Baby Turned One...

Mini Monsieur threw a big bash to celebrate his first year and all his baby friends turned up to help him celebrate. I even managed to fit in the time to make his cake...

A Most Curious Wedding Fair
The lovely Becky of A Most Curious Party launched her first wedding fair up in Norwich in spring which we were delighted to exhibit at. I took intern Charlie, photographer Sara Thomas and my sister up for the day and met some fabulous brides and suppliers...

The Curiosity Project

At a time when the London riots were kicking off, moral was pretty low and we all needed a pick-me-up. So in August I launched The Curiosity Project and, now into our 2nd worldwide gift swapping project, with over 560 participants and a new site that since November has received almost 100,000 hits, it is growing stronger every day. There's lots of exciting new developments for the project in 2012 and if you'd like to join future projects, find a DIY project or just fancy having a nosy, check out the site!

This week I'm starting to feel really Christmassy! So I was inspired to create a 'Winter Wedding' mood board. Most weddings are in the spring or summer, so I think there are more opportunities in the colder months to make your wedding feel really unique. If it is around Christmas you can add a hint of festivity to your decorations, such as hanging groups of glass baubles, or making your own garlands and wreaths. I love the idea of getting married when it is cold and icy - it allows you to add a few glamorous accessories that you might not normally need, like a fur cape or collar, long elegant gloves, or even some white laced boots! You may also want to mirror the weather by opting for a pale colour palette - I think whites, pale blues and metallics can look really subtle and sophisticated, but at the same time allow you to add a bit of sparkle!

1930s Silhouettes

This week I am looking at the 1930s silhouette. It was such an glamorous era, the golden age of Hollywood. I am particularly inspired by the the actress Ginger Rogers, whose long, flowing dresses elongated and streamlined her figure, creating a lovely, elegant silhouette. To recreate a 1930's look, choose luxurious silks and satins cut on the bias to highlight your waist and lengthen your figure. Metallic details such as silver shoes or beading add a touch of glamour. A really nice touch is to have your hair set in Marcel waves, and for some real Hollywood glamour - scarlet lips!

The Cake Parlour Turns 1!

A whole cabinet dedicated to ruffle cakes! J'adore!

Last week I had the pleasure of visiting cake designer extraordinaire Zoe Clark's boutique The Cake Parlour on the eve of its 1st anniversary. Since its opening, Zoe literally hadn't the time to organise a launch as she'd been inundated with clients for weddings and parties (oh, and writing fabulous books too) so it was a treat to finally view her beautiful shop and have a good old catch up!

Guests were treated to a delicious and sweet selection of confections to try and goodie bags were on hand to stock up with (yes, I took home plenty of cupcakes, biscuits, meringues and fancies and can confirm that they were indeed exceptionally good).

In between sipping on my sparkling wine and mouthfuls of cake I managed to take a few photos of my favourites just for you...

Zoe's creations often take inspiration from bridal gowns as the fabrics and embellishments really spark her creativity. I love the idea of a couple's wedding cake reflecting elements of the bride's dress, it's a great way to tie everything into a cohesive design.

If you're planning on surprising your guests with a dessert table Zoe's team can design and create everything for you which takes the inconvenience away from sourcing everything separately too. Perfect.

The images I have collected this week are inspired by the film 'Chocolat'. Like the film, I have tried to combine the 1950's silhouette with a bohemian French feel. There is a scene in the film where they have a party in a traditional french courtyard - a feast is spread out on a long table and everybody helps themselves. I love this idea for a wedding, the table filled with colourful flowers and lights strung up for when it starts to get dark. Bright colours work really well with a 1950s theme - if you want to wear white you can still add dashes of colour through your shoes, sash or flowers.

A Tribute To A Beautiful Friend

Yesterday I lost a friend to cancer. She was brilliant and I mean that in every sense of the word. Despite the significant age gap we had so much in common and it was a friendship that was nurtured through our love of samba.

I first met Diane when I travelled all the way down to London from Ipswich one gloomy Sunday night for a work shop at the London School of Samba. I'd never danced samba before, let alone been to an escola and yet, being welcomed on the door by this lovely lady suddenly put my mind at rest. I knew I was in the right place and there I stayed for a few years thereafter.

Diane was a real go-getter. She played 2nd surdo (those are the large, deep drums for those not in the know-much like Di, they are the heart of the samba). She took no nonsense and boy did she know how to have a good time.

A few years ago she decided, alongside her wonderful partner or "significant other" (now husband) Norm to pack up and retire to Mallorca. It was like losing a member of the family for the school where she'd been such an integral part for the 25 years since it started, but she knew it was something they'd wanted to do. She started up her own blog to keep us all informed of their antics and escapades and called it 'Two Crumblies And A Cat'. If you get the chance to read some of it, it really is very good, her sense of humour really shines through. It was also on her blog that most of us found out that she'd been diagnosed with bowel cancer-that didn't stop her taking time out to be glammed up for a photo shoot though!

We followed her journey through her various treatments and experiences of Spanish hospitals before she was told in no uncertain terms that it was terminal. Within weeks she and Norm has sold their apartment and moved back to Suffolk to be closer to her children, they got married, found somewhere new to call home by the sea and were very happy despite it all.

Earlier this year I did the Race For Life 10K speed walking with my best friend in Di's name and it felt really good to be raising money and helping to get one step closer to finding a cure.

The last time I saw her was a few months ago now with Norm. She met my son, we talked about antiques, drove past many an Art Deco house swooning on our travels down the coast and had a wonderful day full of laughter. Of course she seemed tired, but that wasn't going to stop her living. She'd even had a piano delivered up several flights of stairs the day before-her latest steal from a local auction that she was over the moon with and delighted to be able to start playing again.

Thank you for being my friend Diane. Thank you for welcoming me into a world that meant so much to me for many years. Thanks for the laughs. I promise to look in on Norm as much as I can.

And yes, I can already hear you telling me to "pull yourself together and get on with it", so here it is, my tribute to you, Beth Carvalho's Vou Festejar (I celebrate).

Rest In Peace my friend.

It's extremely rare that I see a Russian bridal label and fall in love with it instantly. It might be snobbish of me but when I think of Eastern European wedding dresses I think of something out of date, tacky even. Sorry!

But anywhere, that was before I stumbled upon the delicately beautiful Papilio collection. Love, love love. Such a stunning selection of silhouettes, lace and detailing with some gorgeous vintage inspired designs. Seriously, check them out for yourself...

Unfortunately this collection isn't stocked anywhere in the UK, but you can find them in France, Germany, Poland and other European countries as well as the US.

Recycled Rustic Wedding

This week I have been looking at unique ways to decorate a wedding that are both simple and effective. I have pulled together some images that have quite a neutral, rustic feel, that can be easily achieved by collecting interesting objects and recycling everyday materials. One of my favourite ideas is paper flowers, which can be made from recycling newspaper, old books or music sheets. They can be made into wreaths, strung into garlands, or used singularly on tables or on the backs of chairs.

To continue this theme, you could use the same paper to make bunting (perhaps in slightly different shades of neutral, some printed, some plain), tassles or place mats.

Another nice idea is collecting certain objects such as old keys, postcards, vintage labels or stamps (which can all be found at car boot sales, markets, or even on ebay), and using them for place names, or even as part of your wedding stationary.

There are so many simple details that you can put together yourself that will transform your wedding, from hanging glass bottles on mass to create your own chandelier, to using old wooden clothes pegs to hang place names or photos. Have fun collecting!

The Ballet

Last week I went to see the Degas exhibition at the Royal Academy, and found his portrayals of dancers absolutely beautiful. Ballet is so graceful and elegant - exactly what you want to exude as a bride. I am not going to suggest a ballet themed wedding, but I think that there are elements of ballet that are really inspiring. Firstly the colour palette - pale peach, soft greys, greens and blues. These colours could be worked into a wedding in a subtle way, perhaps through the flowers or small details such as a satin sash, or ballet pumps for young bridesmaids. I love the idea of multiple layers of soft tulle - maybe even incorporating a variation of really soft colours within the layers. Another lovely element of ballet is the traditional hairstyle, smoothed back into a big bun which makes your neck look longer and more graceful.

Who Am I?

I'm Rob Riley, the husband of Tiffany and co-founder of Grant-Riley Weddings. In addition to my involvement in the aforementioned, I'm an IT consultant, programmer, musician, karate student and father. I play guitar a lot and am learning Italian. Busy? YES! Tired? Sometimes. Bored? Never. I genuinely wake up excited 7 days a week.

What's my involvement in the company?

I'm responsible for GRW's web site and anything technical related to web, email, computers and other technologies. I also assist with company administration, accounts, contracts and general decision making. With regards to actual weddings, I assist with administration and logistical planning and generally act as a second pair of eyes and ears for Tiff's creative flow. I'm also an expert at car-loading which, on the big day, is a priceless skill. If there was a record for the most cake stands ever (safely) packed into a Volkswagen..

Do I attend dress fittings and floral consultations?

No. (Well not unless you want me to.) I don't touch the creative stuff at all. But I do, amongst other things, assist in the meticulous construction and management of your wedding budget and timesheet which, if you didn't know, are the two most important documents involved in ensuring your wedding day is a success.

Why, after nearly 5 years of GRW am I only introducing myself now?

In the beginning, we decided to promote Tiff as the sole face of the company. Until now, this has worked for us and there's very few people in the UK wedding industry that haven't heard of her. But as things continue to grow we decided to re-visit this and now feel it's important for current and prospective clients to understand that there's actually a team of people supporting them and managing their day.

So administration and car-loading. Big whoop. Why should that make you want to book with GRW any more?

It's simple. Wedding planning is just that. The clue's in the title. The creative element is only part of it. The rest is meticulously planning the running of a wedding day to the exact minute. And in the unlikely event that the clipboard queen herself should leave a box un-ticked, I'm the one who will be breathing down her neck and (smugly) pointing it out. Ok, this has never actually happened but you get the idea. My enthusiasm is for doing good business, client satisfaction and generally doing the best job possible. I'm the guy who, whatever the job, goes that extra mile to ensure it gets done properly. Hypothetically (but sometimes literally), I arrive before everyone else to get the kettle on and I stay after everyone else to sweep the floor.

Do I share my wife's level of enthusiasm for vintage?

For shoes and dresses? No. But show me a '69 Dodge Charger...

This weekend Vivienne Westwood unveiled (excuse the pun) her 2012 bridal collection at The Luxury Wedding Show and we were not disappointed. Without doubt this subtle yet theatrical graduated blush number stood out most for me amongst a sea of ivory. It got me thinking about the 2012 trends and the reintroduction of colour. We're seeing a lot more colour next year in subtle ways, be in dip dyed, layered in graduation or toned sections.

I recently went to Kempton Antiques Market, where I came across a stall full of old antique lace. There were piles of it folded up, all different shades of white, cream, oyster and champagne. There is something so beautiful about antique lace, it is often softer in both colour and texture than the more modern variety, which I find can sometimes be stiff and overly white. What I loved about the lace that I saw at Kempton, was that each piece had its own history. There were baskets full of lace trimming that had been saved from old dresses, blouses, tablecloths and hankies, obviously too precious to throw away.

Lace is frequently chosen by brides as it is both delicate and intricately detailed. Antique lace is so lovely as it is usually handmade, and I believe more beautiful and interesting because of its history. It can also be really exciting hunting for the perfect piece, whether it is a vintage gown or veil, or smaller bits used for details such as bunting or invitations.

Hopelessly In Love With...Christmas Hall

A few months back, whilst visiting family up in Suffolk I had the pleasure to be invited by the lovely Helen of Affinity PR (who spookily happens to be my bestie's mum's bestie...you work it out!) for a show around at Christmas Hall in Bildeston.

With mum and baby in tow we parked in the quaint village square to see this shining example of Victorian architecture and Helen waiting in the driveway to welcome us. No sooner had I stepped through the door I knew this would make the most spectacular venue for an intimate wedding. Christmas Hall is an exclusive venue, owned by Hazel and Jeff Gadsden, both with a background of interior design and property development, who know how important it is to provide those personal touches and a high quality experience for their guests. They are always close at hand whilst giving their guests the space they need (they live over the garden wall in the coach house).

The Dining Room

The dining room is literally bathed in light from the tall windows at the front and french doors leading onto the decked area into the garden. The hall can cater for up to 26 guests in this room around the grand dining table and is also licensed for ceremonies.

This venue also sleeps up to 20 guests, meaning that you can accommodate all if not most of your wedding party. Each bedroom is just divine and you get a real feel of the history of the house through the hidden servant's staircases and the nanny's quarters and dormitory at the top of the house on the 3rd floor. As you explore the house you'll find all sorts of original Victorian features, including the range in the kitchen and the winding main staircase.

If you can't be bothered to cook during your stay, then you couldn't be in a better place, as Bildeston's award winning pub The Crown is just a stone's throw across the road.

Intimate venues are very hard to find and this is a hidden gem, well worth a look for hen parties, family bookings and more. The surrounding area boasts some of the most beautiful views in Suffolk and there are plenty of good country walks and other activities to get stuck into.

The Planner's Guide: In-House & Independent Planners

The latest instalment of The Planner's Guide centres around the role of in-house and independent planners, the differences and similarities of their respective jobs and how they work both separately and together.

In-House Coordinators

The vast majority of wedding venues across the UK will now have their own dedicated coordinator, be it on their own or within a rotating team. The general day-to day tasks of in-house staff are to provide support to the venue be it through showing round potential new clients, keeping up to date with existing clients' wedding plans from ensuring all the catering is arranged, liaising with other suppliers, to putting together the final schedule for the day and of course overseeing the weddings that take place.
It is also usually your venue that will contact the registrar to preliminarily book in your ceremony for you as your registrar will need proof that your venue of choice is legally licensed. They will also have a good relationship with the superintendent registrar in the area.

Independent Planners

A stand-alone planner is jack of all trades. To give you an example, my work includes sourcing venues, managing the budget, sourcing and hiring suppliers, liaising with venue staff and suppliers, designing and dressing, providing general day to day support to clients and of course the day itself (and sometimes afterwards too). It's like asking how long a piece of string is when it comes to what I do for my clients, the list is potentially endless!

Why Should I Hire A Planner?

Whilst your venue has its own coordination team on hand to ensure your day runs well, it is worth noting that generally (and I say generally so as I don't step on anyone's toes!) your coordinator is there for the venue and what goes on within those boundaries. Beyond that point, it's your responsibility, meaning that you can't call them out of hours to discuss chasing those RSVPs or to change the shade of rose in your bouquet. They have nothing to do with your arrival at the church, nor is it their responsibility to chase your hair stylist if they're late. This is where an independent planner comes in-they are there entirely for you to ensure every single aspect of your day is looked after, even if you choose not to have one to guide you through the planning process it is most definitely worth considering one for the day itself.

How Do Venues & Planners Work Together?

I've been really lucky in that the venue coordinators I've worked with have found working with me nothing but helpful. I deal with the front line issues with the bride and groom, liaise with their suppliers and prepare all the wedding day documents to be sent over to the venue meaning they don't need to spend time chasing answers and can focus on ensuring the venue works like clockwork on the day. It also means that by the time the day arrives, we're all on good terms working as a team and know exactly who does what and when. It takes some of the pressure off their team and in turn takes the pressure off me.

A typical day might start with me checking in on the bride/groom whilst they prepare before I head off to the venue to dress it whilst the staff lay up for service. Once I'm at the ceremony (if they're in separate places) I can then call ahead to inform the venue once the wedding party are setting off for the reception so everyone can be ready to stand by. Throughout the day I look after my bride and groom and ensure all the little details are taken care of, and it there are any concerns or requests I can feedback quickly to the venue staff. Simple logistics that make all the difference.

I hope this post has helped clear up those differences and that they've helped you to consider hiring someone, regardless of where you are in your planning.

The Curiosity Project Has Moved!

You may have noticed the announcement of our exciting new project a few months back, in fact, you may even be taking part by now. Over the weeks following the announcement a total of 232 of you signed up to be a part of it and we took it worldwide! It got so big, in fact, that we had to dedicate its own blog to it, given the realisation of the number of boxes that'd be featured by the time the project came to a close.

So if you're sitting here waiting for updates and wondering why you've not heard anything...check the new blog instead and have at good nose at some of the boxes our lovely participants have received so far.

Happy Monday morning to you all and it sure is a wonderful Monday, as we're kicking off the week with our lovely creator/maker Harriet's first inspiration post in her very own series, Inspired.By.Harriet. Each week she'll be bringing plenty of sumptuous wedding inspiration to your fingertips, so show her some love...

Tiffany has asked me to pull some images together that I find inspiring (and that I hope will inspire you too!). I am very excited about my first post!

I have created a moodboard around the theme of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby'. There is something so elegant and graceful about the 1920's, I love the decadence and glamour of the era, with its heavily beaded gowns and delicate sheer fabrics.

When pulling together a look, I like to pick and choose particular elements that I find most inspiring to create a unique style. A feature of the 1920's bride that I especially like is the head piece - a close fitting veil usually incorporating one or two oversized flowers. By hunting around vintage fairs, I have found these are often the best places to find lovely antique lace and trimmings, silk flowers, and other gems! If you choose to have embellishments on your veil, a really nice way to bring the look together is to mirror these details on your gown, such as beading or embroidery. It is also a nice idea to pull these ideas through to smaller details, such as lace on your bouquet, or as part of your favours.

Creating a vintage look can be really fun - poke around car-boot sales and antique shops, you can find some real treasures that will make your wedding individual.

Boardwalk Empire, Season Two Premier

A few weeks back I got an extremely excited DM over Twitter from close friend and Love My Dress blogger Annabel Beeforth to say she'd been invited by Sky Atlantic to their season 2 launch party of Boardwalk Empire and would she be interested in attending with some friends. The party was, in true prohibition style, to be held in a secret location where guests were to be treated to a variety of cocktails and other intoxicating liquors, entertained by ungodly dancers and the devil's swing music. You can imagine what both her and my answer was. Y. E. S.

Given the close bond we'd created throughout our pregnancies, we knew we couldn't go without asking 1920s enthusiast Vicky Rowe of Vintage Tea Sets, Clara Bows and, most recently, LeLuxe Clothing UK.

Photographer Kirsten Mavric, who I'd previously worked with on a Boardwalk Empire inspired shoot joined us for the ride and kindly documented the evening for us. Thanks Kirsten!

All of us being huge fans of the hit U.S drama, we couldn't wait to see what was it store for season two-would Jimmy and Al Capone gain the upper hand over Nucky? How would Margaret Schroeder battle with her morals in order to give her children a better life? Just wait and see ;-)

The girls and I got ourselves into the party mood at the uber chic Trafalgar Hotel whose staff looked after our every need. I love this place, it has it all-attentive staff, great food, the most comfortable beds and did I mention the view?

The choice was a tricky one, but I fell in love with the Garcon. Vicky also stocks some beautiful designs in ivory, perfect for a 20s bride.

The Big Screening!

Finally the moment had arrived and eagerly the crowd made their way upstairs to the screening room. Each with a goody bag of refreshments on our laps we settled down to kick off the 1st episode of series 2 of Boardwalk Empire!

The verdict? We were very impressed. And we liked that the first episode recapped a little of the last series and gave a real flavour of what was to come. It was funny, too.

Mini Monsieur & The 1st Birthday Party...

Last Tuesday I became the mother of a one year old. It's been an incredible rollercoaster of a year for all of us, a crash course in parenting for me and Mr Riley, a test of patience, sleep depravation, learning to rely on friends and being supported by family at the drop of a hat. It was a year of extreme highs, from the moment he was born watching him grow month by month, and the lows where we wondered how we'd ever find some sense of normality again. He is the most wonderful person ever to come into our lives, he has the most incredible personality, he's easy going, he loves to laugh, enjoys socialising. We love our Mini Monsieur.

The wonderful Jenny Keegan of In The Treehouse Designs came up with an utterly fabulous design for the invitations...

And so, I spent a week preparing for his big celebration at the weekend, the basic design of which based on Eric Carle's 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and other garden critters. We hired a hall just a stone's throw from home, enlisted the help of my family and bundled in on an early afternoon to deck it out...

Birthday Girl

So yesterday was my 28th birthday and I had the most wonderful day with my family, spending the day in Rochester for a spot of lunch and antiquing-basically a typical Tiff day!

I thought it'd be fun to share some facts about me that you may not, or didn't know. Apparently as my readers you're enjoying the more personal posts...so here goes!

1. I don't drive. YET. I am learning...but it doesn't stop me getting to where I need to go.

2. I'm 1/4 Guyanese.

3. My 2nd cousin is Eddy Grant of 'Electric Avenue' fame. In fact, I come from a very musically talented family (that's how we roll).

4. I read with my left eye closed in bed. Sometimes I don't even realise I'm doing it but for some reason I feel more relaxed when I do.

5. I am an awesome cook. I'm also very modest.

6. Maths is not my strongest point, which is great news considering I have to manage budgets! When I was at primary school, I used to give my work sheets to my best friend who sat next to me to do. You can imagine my surprise when I moved to middle school and they put me in the top set. Needless to say, I didn't last very long!

7. Graveyards are a real draw for me. I love to spend an hour or so wandering round then, reading the head stones and trying to imagine what kind of people they were and who they left behind.

8. I met my husband at university. I was the student, he was the lecturer...although not mine I might add ;-)

9. I'm fiercely competitive. Seriously. If I feel someone encroaching on my turf, bring it on. It's good to keep on your toes though, don't you think?

10. My husband and I have been having a brazen love affair with Italy for the past 6 years and plans are being put in place for us to relocate out to Tuscany in the next few years. La dolce vita here we come!

The Planner's Guide: Wedding Casualties Part Two

I was utterly astounded at the incredible response I had from last week's post in The Planner's Guide series about my relationship with my father, divorced parents and dispelling some of the tension between divorced parents on the wedding day. Thank you for all your comments and support, I never knew how many of you were in similar positions and now I feel as though I can dispel the taboo surrounding "broken families" and the world of weddings. Life isn't perfect and there's nothing to be ashamed of.

So this week has a slightly lighter feel to it, although I'm still going to be uncovering some uncomfortable truths, dealing with friendships, bridesmaids (including being one...or not, but we'll come to that) and for those in the wedding industry, doing favours for friends.

My Best Friend's Wedding

I had a very close friend who got engaged in 2009 and as us ladies do we soon got together to chat all things wedding. She was a bridesmaid at my wedding so I was over the moon when she asked me to be her's. I had promised to help her as much as I could throughout her planning but, in order to have my undivided attention I felt it would be better to charge a small fee if she needed particular attention so that I could schedule her in as a client (mate's rates of course).
Having known each other for over ten years we had one of those fabulous relationships where even we if didn't see each other for months we could still pick up as if no time had passed at all. We knew each other inside out.

Last year I had my son and what with one thing and another, I fell apart. Trying to juggle my business keeping clients happy, adjusting to a tiny being having total dependency on me, nightmares breast feeding and it all got too much. I ended up on anti-depressants and the best I could do was put on a front and do the absolute basics. I was just about functioning. It was inevitable, then, that my attention as a bridesmaid would slip somewhat for my friend who was getting married the following August. I gave as much advice as I could, from sourcing possible venues, pulling together ideas for design, marquee companies etc, but I told her quite clearly that I had too much on my plate to organise her hen weekend abroad (nevermind leaving my son) make her dress appointments, provide constant support as well as for my clients and keep my head above water. I thought she understood.

Fast forward to spring 2011. It's hectic. I've just taken on an intern to help with the work load, my sister is coming up to look after my son twice a week and there are three weddings in immediate succession from the end of May right through to mid June. When I hit wedding season, I have my head down until the dust has settled, it requires all my energy and concentration and that's that-most friends and family totally understand this. I felt terribly guilty that I wasn't around to support my friend, whose planning had been somewhat stressful given the numbers her family wanted to invite and logistics of it all, so I sent a message or two to let her know I was still there and would be back onboard with her after June.
You can imagine my utter surprise then when I receive a message from my friend to say that she felt it was best, given that my priorities had changed, that I wasn't a bridesmaid anymore. Wow. Really?

As a planner I know all too well how brides can feel overwhelmed at times and that their wedding can completely overshadow rational thinking, but this was something else entirely. She had four bridesmaids to whom she could turn to for support, she knew how much I was struggling and indeed how much I had tried to help her during the beginning. I felt a little as though the main reason she'd asked me in the first place was because I was a wedding planner and therefore available all hours. The fact that she'd decided without talking to me first to un-bridesmaid and "downgrade me" to a guest really hurt and made me question our entire friendship.

To cut a long story short, I asked her not to invite us at all. She got married in August and that was that. I was so sad to have missed it and I mourn over our lost friendship. But they say that people come and go throughout life, perhaps she wasn't meant to stay in mine.

Doing Favours

No doubt there are many wedding professionals out there who have done favours for their friends' weddings, be it a way to gain portfolio, experience or just for the love of it. It's a great feeling to pour your heart into something for a friend and I love to do it as often as I can, be it making their cake, doing the flowers or providing advice.

There comes a time though, when it can all get a bit too much. It is, after all, your job. And whilst it's perfectly do-able to help out on bits and pieces, when it starts to become a little bit too much and you're not being paid to do it, you wonder what it's all for. It can create tension between you too. Have you ever noticed that? Suddenly you start viewing them in another light. A favour is a favour, not a full time job.

How Can I Help On My Terms?

♡ Agree exactly what you're going to do from the outset so that you both understand what's expected of you and what's outside of your agreement.

♡ Discuss what you're willing to do for free and what else will be charged for.

♡ Talk! For crying out loud, communicate. If either of you are unhappy with each other for whatever reason, talk about it before things reach the stage they did for me. Losing a friend is an awful thing to have to happen over such a happy occasion.

The Planner's Guide: Wedding Casualties Part One

The word "wedding" is synonymous with love, happiness and celebration but perhaps not so much with feuds, fall outs and sadness. This is a subject that I'm unfortunately far too familiar with. I've toyed with writing about it for some time and have held back until now. I'm talking about the casualties of wedding planning, from fall outs with family and friends, to misunderstandings doing "favours" for friends who work outside of the industry.
It's a touchy subject and one that tends to end up buried under a mountain of confetti after the big day. Given the nature of the subject, I'm writing it in two parts...

The Family

When I was old enough to understand what weddings were all about, my first thought wasn't what my dress would look like or if I'd marry a prince, rather it was whether or not my dad would give me away or be allowed to be there. It might sound odd but if you've grown up with divorced parents you'll know what I'm talking about.

My father was what you'd call a "weekend dad", although visits weren't as regular as that, owing to the fact he travelled a lot for work and pleasure, so being our father was more of a hobby than part of his being. It was hardly surprising then that over time we became estranged. Mum met a wonderful man who became our stepfather when I was 15 and that was that.

Up to the point I became engaged, our relationship went through various cycles of speaking and not speaking, being really close and falling out. All the while I agonised over whether or not my mother would be alright having my dad at the wedding and if the rest of my family would be able to be civil for the day. I always wanted to be a daddy's girl and would spend hours watching real weddings on Wedding TV blubbing as the bride's father walked her down the aisle. We didn't have that kind of relationship though, in fact, we hardly knew each other. So, thinking I was being diplomatic, I asked my younger brother to give me away knowing that not only would it be a lovely gesture to involve him but it meant that I wouldn't upset my father or step-dad by asking one of them to instead.

One afternoon I sat down with mum and discussed the taboo subject of "dad and the wedding" and very gracefully she allayed my fears and agreed to put the past aside for the day for me (it was my day after all and I was still his daughter) and that it was ok to invite him.

Mum accompanied me in the car to the ceremony. It was one of my favourite moments of the day, she kept me calm.

Feeling as if a real weight had been lifted, I set about addressing our beautifully letter pressed invitations, his all ready to post the following day. I never got to send that invitation because that evening he called to say he wouldn't be coming as he felt hurt that I'd not asked him to give me away. Given his track record I'd said I thought it was obvious why I'd not asked him-you can't not help bring a child up and then claim the glory when you feel like it and that by asking my brother I'd thought I wasn't offending anyone. Surely to be present on your daughter's wedding day and see her married was enough? Apparently not.

Three years on, we haven't spoken since that day in May 2008, we were married that August. I've no idea if he knows about our son who is one in two weeks or how well my business is doing, that I've uncovered a whole contingency of his family through this article I wrote and that makes me feel incredibly sad.

For the most part, my clients' planning goes without a hitch and although I've had to be the impartial mediator at times to help them decide how to proceed through the day with their parents to ensure that both parties feel included, we've had no situations such as mine.

If you're wondering how to make it work for yourself, consider these points:

♡ If, like me your parents' relationship is particularly strained, make sure you discuss your wishes for your wedding day early on into your planning so that any issues can be resolved as much as possible by the day itself.

♡ Find a way to include both sets of parents in the planning-perhaps ask dad to find your transport and mum to shop for your dress and cake with you.

♡ A great way to keep both parents happy on the day is to have each parent host their own table with at least one familiar/neutral face on each. It'll make them feel included and should avoid any tensions.

♡ If you feel uncomfortable with a parent being at the reception in case there is bad feeling amongst other family members, then invite them to the ceremony only and arrange to have a meal together to celebrate another time. Explain your reasons. It might seem extreme, but they ought to see your side of the story.

♡ Worried about potential punch ups? Yes, I know it sounds extreme but alcohol is a wonderful catalyst for such things. Let a few trust-worthy, calm and reliable members of your party know your concerns and to keep an eye out during the day so that if anything should arise it can be diffused quickly and without a scene.

It's never an ideal situation to fall out with any family members. Weddings seem to heighten everyone's emotions, they're also the time when you find out both who is important to you and who you're important to. Think rationally before you make any rash decisions in case you regret the consequences. In my father's case it was the nail in the coffin for us-I saw that his reputation was more important than me and I've closed that chapter.

On a happier note, when a family is close there's nothing more wonderful than seeing them spending time celebrating together at the wedding and I love being an honorary member for the day.

Several weeks back I took some time out of a busy wedding season to head back home up to Suffolk and stay with the parentals. As with any home visit, a trip to the Suffolk coast is essential and something we do without fail every summer. Breaking tradition, we decided against Aldeburgh and headed a little further up the coast to Southwold and armed with my brother's camera, I took some "shots".

The lighthouse near the Adnams Brewery. The smell of hops is just delicious combined with freshly fried fish and chips...

For some bizarre reason, the entire town was covered in ladybirds. Considered a lucky charm in Italy, I thought at first how wonderful it was...but by the end of our day we were cursing the lot of 'em. Grrrr!

If you're ever up in sunny Suffolk, put Southwold on your list, you'll love it. You can even hire a beach hut for £18 a day!

Last week the wonderfully lovely Harriet joined the team (well, I say 'team'...it's just the two of us!) as 'Creator-Maker'. She'll mainly work on the design side of our weddings, producing decor and styling alongside me.

It just so happens that she's one incredibly talented lady, the daughter of a painter with a degree in textiles, she studied at Goldsmith's University and is now the Display Manager at one of the most stunning stores in the world, Anthropologie. How could I not take her on?

I first met Sarah and Ben over a year ago now, bright eyed and bushy tailed and very ready to start their planning. They knew they wanted a relaxed, family affair with a 50s feel but beyond that they were open to suggestions. I never knew that over the course of the year this lovely couple, who met on a internet dating site, would become such wonderful friends.

So this post is a little extra special for me, hence the abundance of images I've got to share with you, courtesy of the incredible Emma Case and her legendary husband Pete 'I Bring The Party' Smyth. The Rougham Air & Classic Car Show

Yep. That's my happy face, stood in front of a deliciously classic car. I couldn't help myself, I had to be sprawled across it in some way, shape or form. And yes, everyone thought I was a tart for doing it.

Thought I'd share with you the shots I took following a crash course in photography (about 15 minutes to be precise) using my brother's Canon. Am I pleased with them? Considering I'm glued to Instagram, Hipstamatic and Lo-Mob (sharp in-take of breath from the die hard photographers out there) yes! These were all taken at the Rougham Air & Classic Car show up in Suffolk where our family indulged in a glorious selection of cars from Rolls' to Bedfords, Fords to Studebakers and let's not forget the favourite in our family, the humble yet faithful VW.

I was desperate to take this with me for future shoots!

Towards the end of the show the airfield team regaled the crowds with a spectacular air display. Normally the thought of this would bore me to death but I was pleasantly surprised at the skill and daring that goes into doing such a thing. The Planner's Guide: Choosing, Hiring & Working With Your Planner

As a planner and consultant this is a subject I'm often asked about and it's part of my job to answer in a way that potential clients can understand it. The notion of hiring a wedding planner is still an idea that's taking a bit of time to catch on in the UK. In the US, it's more unusual not to have a planner and it's considered the norm, a necessary lifestyle choice.

Having spoken to many brides during my career so far those that didn't hire a planner said they thought that:

• by hiring a planner they would lose all control of their wedding and couldn't make their own choices.

• they would be forced into using suppliers they didn't want.

• it was a luxury they couldn't afford.

Dispelling The Myths
Every now and then a film will come out involving a grossly over-played wedding planner who either steals the groom, double books the bride's date or freely helps himself to the father of the bride's bank account...

IT'S NOT TRUE!!!

1. I promise you, nothing would upset me more than being left to my own devices to plan a wedding without 100% input from the bride and groom-it's your day, not mine.

2. I'm happily married already thank you.

3. Your budget is not my money to spend, all I can do is advise the best areas in which to allocate it. If your budget doesn't match your ideas for the big day then I'll be honest with you and find ways of getting around it.

4. Yes, hiring a planner is without doubt an investment, but given the number of hours spent on your plans, perfecting the details, liaising with suppliers, negotiating and of course coordinating, the right planner is worth her (or his) weight in gold. I can't tell you how many brides I've met have since wished they'd hired someone, at the very least to oversee the day itself to eleviate some of the stress to allow them to enjoy themselves fully.

Ok, I'm listening. How Do I Find The Right Planner For Me?

Research

The internet is a great resource. Search for planners in your area, look over their websites.

• What does the site say about them?

• Do you like their style?

• Do they have an extensive portfolio you can view?

• Can you learn something about their personality-is there a common ground there?

• What about their training and experience?

• Do they have a blog they update regularly?

Fees

As in my previous post in The Planner's Guide, every planner has their own structure of fees. Work out what you'd be willing to spend and contact those within your budget.

Connect

The first step would be to get in touch via email or pick up the phone if you would prefer. Ask if your date is available (if known) and spend a few minutes talking to the planner. They'll ask you about your requirements-venue, number of guests, style etc. and suggest meeting for a consultation. This is normally around an hour long and generally the planner will come to you unless they have a preferred venue of choice for this. Bring any information you have already, be it a folder of inspiration or a list of suppliers you've already booked. This is as much about you getting to know the planner as much as it is them finding out about you, so please feel free to ask as much as you like about their services and how they like to work. Don't be afraid to ask about their fees, whether or not they will send you a proposal of services and find out how much you'll need to pay upfront and throughout the process of planning.

Choose Carefully

Unfortunately, there's no real way of regulating planners in the industry in the way that there is with the gas man or a plumber meaning that there are those out there without enough experience or knowledge of the industry. Ask for references, find out if the planner is connected to any venues. Have they trained in the field (I'm not just talking about a weekend planning course)? Do they have Public Liability Insurance? Have they been featured on any wedding blogs or had press in bridal magazines?

If, after you've covered all bases, go ahead and book with your planner. They'll have their own procedure for this but I take a booking fee (dependent on the service) and need a contract signed and returned along with the terms and conditions before I book any client in.

Working Together

I take my lead from my clients. If they are very hands on we can be in touch regularly by email almost daily sometimes, on the other hand if they prefer for me to get on with it then we'll be in touch once a week or fortnight.

I'm there to support my clients every step of the way, no question is too silly, as is no task (within reason!) It's about providing guidance throughout the journey, being an impartial voice during the occasional difficult time and of course, creating the most incredible day they'll remember for the rest of their lives.

So, before jumping to conclusions and believing those stereotypes, look one of us up and have a chat. If you're short of time or inspiration we really do come in handy. We love our jobs very much and the biggest reward is to see you both over the moon on your wedding day.

Real Weddings: Love In London

Well, I am truly ashamed of myself. It's only taken me just over a month to get this beauty of a real wedding blogged. In my defence though, it has been featured on Love My Dress so you can read the bride and groom's perspective there.

June 4th was an insanely happy day for me-I finally got to see Lucy and Greg married and share the celebrations with their family and friends . I was also excited to see their design come together which I'd helped Lucy on a few months before (as is the case with many brides, she had lots of ideas but needed help to refine them into something concise). In line with their London theme, we introduced iconic elements of the city into their day, from the red Routemaster, vintage black taxis to the good old Union Jack, mixed in with a colour scheme of green, gold and cream. Personally, I LOVE it...

Lucy designed the invitations based on the Keep Calm and Carry On posters...and it was Greg's task to print them.

The lace around Lucy's bouquet almost matched the trim on her Alan Hannah gown.

Lucy, her sister Sarah and Greg spent a weekend making her grandmother's fudge as favours, sealed with a sticker of her on her wedding day.

The Haribo sweets have a personal meaning. Not telling you what though ;-)

Green and white hydrangeas were provided the base for the flowers, with the addition of freesias, agapanthus, stocks, scabious and herbs.

Instead of just one cake we were greedy and went for a select of Lucy and Greg's personal favourites!

See those cushions? Lucy made some of those. Yep, she's good.

I love this photo. It's what we in the industry call "The Magic Light".

Thanks to Lucy and Greg for having me along for the ride, I had a great couple of months working with you both and shall miss you muchly. Congratulations again!

Home Is Where The Heart Is...

Yesterday I got back from a week in Suffolk staying with my parents, enjoying in-house babysitting, mum's home cooking and family. Boy did I need it!

I love coming home, until the birth of our son it felt more like Suffolk was "home" and Kent was just "where I lived". It's a house full of character, family memories and of course oodles of vintage charm. Mum is quite the antiquarian (that's where I get it from) and loves collecting Victoriana and Edwardiana and the walls are covered in family photos, from when we were young right back to great-great grandparents.

Anyway, a friend of mine told me the other day that I should let my readers see the personal side of me as they like to connect with the person behind the blog, so I took some snaps of details of home just for you...

After throwing a surprise 50th birthday for mum she's been completely won over by yellow flowers.

The original stove in the kitchen. We like to sit and imagine the housekeeper stoking this up in the morning and cooking for the man of the house.

This was part of a birthday present mum hand stitched for me when I was 8 (I think).

The Icing On The Cake

Mum was over the moon!

Last week I met up for a day of filming with cake designer extraordinaire Janet Mohapi-Banks and the incredibly talented film makers Julie and Danny of Minty Slippers for Love My Dress blog.

You may or may not know that I'm an avid cake maker and enjoy the challenge of making wedding and birthday cakes for friends and family-maybe you've seen a few? It all started two years ago when my lovely friend Juliet Sear of Fancy Nancy invited me up for a crash course and I've been hooked ever since. The problem is though, that although I can bake, construct and simply decorate a cake with my eyes closed, I felt my piping and sugar crafting skills were somewhat lacking. I'm also the kind of person who sulks when I don't get something right the first time (I'm a perfectionist, ok?) so the sugar flowers and piping have taken a bit of a back seat. They look so scary don't they?

Anyway, back to the point. Over the last year or so I've made some fantastic friends over Twitter, one of whom is the lovely Janet. She's a bit of a wonder-woman really, a self made cake guru, entirely self taught and my GOODNESS have you SEEN her work? To top it all off, she's a real laugh and so very genuine. When I mentioned that I wanted to hone in on my piping skills, she suggested we get together for a tutorial. One thing led to another and before we knew it we were arriving at Stacey Marie of Cherry-Topped's house to film it for Love My Dress.

We put together a mini tutorial to show brides how they can decorate a shop bought cake (or one they've made and iced themselves) for their wedding. And, after 5 hours decorating, here's what we achieved, using hot yellow (great colour for weddings). See those roses? I made half of those! And the swags, hearts and little spots? I did half of those too! And guess what? Nothing went wrong, the world didn't end.

Watch this space then, in the meantime, feast your eyes on one we made earlier...

The Planner's Guide: Show Me The Money

This post is to help prospective clients gain a better idea of how planner's fees work, mine in particular. When you hire a planner, you are paying for their time or "man hours" rather than a product as such. Given the range of planners and consultants available on today's market, you're not only spoilt for choice in terms of style and level of experience but also the way in which they structure their fees...

Packages

Some planners structure their services by way of a variety of packages, generally based on full coordination, on the day, design and sourcing. Within these packages are clear outlines as to what is and isn't included along with the total fee.

Percentage

This is a good guideline to use if you're considering a planner and aren't too sure about costs. Generally, a planner working by a percentage of your overall budget will take around 10-12% of it.

Hourly

Not such a popular option amongst British planners, but there are some that charge by the hour instead, based on the average number of hours it takes to complete your planning.

Bespoke

Although when I first launched in 2007 I started with package prices, I felt this wasn't working for me, particularly the way I prefer to work with clients. Packages can be somewhat restrictive and bespoke services allow clients the freedom to cover what they want to do and what they want you to do. I also produce a lot of wedding decor myself which in itself is more time on my part to save costs in other areas, so I need to charge for my time.

Why Don't You Display Fees?

In the beginning I did. However, given my qualifications and experience over the years I made the decision not to when I went 'bespoke'. Why? Many reasons. There is a constant debate as to whether potential clients prefer to see prices or not. Some are put off because there aren't any, others are put off because there are. It's a no win situation.

In recent weeks I've been re-evaluating my business, looking at how it does and doesn't work for me and how I can make small changes. This is one of them-deciding to display starting prices. Whilst this doesn't give exact fees (I prefer to quote after a consultation) it does give potential clients a better idea of how much you can expect to pay for my services.

Consultations. Why Do You Charge?

I used to travel all over to meet brides and, believe it or not, wannabe planners masquerading as brides who were actually just after my business information. The majority of planners still offer complimentary consultations and of course that's entirely up to them.

The first ever consultation I did involved a trip from Kent to Buckinghamshire at rush hour to meet a bride who, after keeping me there for 2 hours, allowing me to go away and produce a proposal left me hanging for two weeks only to respond with "thanks, but I'm getting a friend to do it". I think she knew all along that that was the case, in the meantime I'd wasted my time getting there and back and a good few days writing her proposal. It's a job that is always hit and miss with potential clients and it can be so disheartening when your time has been wasted.

So, I charge a flat £35 for an hour's consultation and, if the bride and groom aren't based in London then I'm happy to meet them at their venue of choice. I still produce the proposal afterwards and of course, they're not obliged to book with me afterwards. It just covers a little bit of my time if they decide not to go ahead.

Budgeting For A Planner

If you absolutely must have a planner as part of your day, try and build one into your budget if you are able. If not, then perhaps you could ask a willing and responsible friend to help you from the off instead.

To give an idea of my fees (before they go up onto the site!) a full coordination starts at £5,000.00. Remember that planning a wedding takes on average anything from 6 to 12 months to plan, and, as your planner I'm on hand throughout the whole process providing support. If you were to divide that fee up over the course of the year, it's not a very big salary and something well worth investing in if you're short of time.

Finishing touches starts from £1,000.00, coverage starting a month before the day, additional costs being travel and potentially accommodation if you're based outside of London or the South East or if I'm needed on site for a few days.

We all love receiving post. I'm not talking the dreaded brown envelope, but something exciting, anticipated, perhaps unexpected. Sometimes, if I'm feeling flush, I like to order myself a few treats and enjoy waiting for their arrival, hoping they look as good in reality as they do online.

I got to thinking, wouldn't it be great if there was a way to get everyone buzzing about something-a little project everyone can be involved in, like the chain letters we used to get as children, only much more exciting! So, The Curiosity Project was born...

Ok, I'm curious...what IS it?

The Curiosity Project is, simply put, a mass exchange of personally chosen gifts between anonymous participants. I give, you receive. You give, I receive...

How Do I Take Part?

The idea itself is simple. Find a box, fill it with trinkets or curiosities and mail it to a stranger. Be creative with it. Take time over choosing its contents, if you're crafty make something. You could find a collection of old things or something brand new. Let it say something about you. Include something that has a meaning for you. Decorate the box, wrap it beautifully. Write a note to the recipient if you like, but don't sign your name. In time, you'll receive your own Curiosity Box from a secret somebody.

When you receive your box, take a photo of its contents-you could be wearing it, making it, reading it-whatever! You could be a professional photographer using your Nikon (or your Canon depending on personal preference!) or you can play around with your Instagram on your iphone.

Email your picture with a response and it'll be featured on the blog. If everyone manages to do this, we can match our senders and recipients up. Just a bit of fun really!

The Rules

The Planner's Guide: Floral Notes

I'd been sat racking my brains deciding which area of planning to tackle for you next when a lovely bride suggested I cover flowers as the whole subject confused her. How much should she set aside? How much does she actually need? Well, at the risk of offending my green fingered friends (you know I love you, right?) you don't actually "need" any. At a time where wedding DIY has never been so hot, it's no longer taboo not to have an abundance of blooms to show for yourselves. But that's not the answer you wanted, was it? Let's face it, with weddings come flowers, however big or small, they're an expected part of the big day.

I've teamed up with florist Gayle Evans of Bloomingales to find out more...

Where to start?

At the very beginning. Please. When you start to look at venues, take into account the size, style and colour scheme of the room(s) you might be using. This will have quite an impact on the flowers you choose. It's a lot to take in in one go, I know, but try and get an idea of what the space needs, ask the venue if they have any images of previous weddings. If you know you have a small flower budget and the room is sizeable with high ceilings, be realistic. Tall displays always work well in these situations and they're notoriously more expensive-particularly if you use candelabra as part of them. Smaller arrangements can look lost in a room such as this, so think carefully before you book and be prepared to allocate more of your budget to the flowers.

Many listed buildings also have rules about what can and can't be used for decorative purposes, so if your venue won't allow you to hang bunting, lights or drapery from the ceiling (this is a great way to bring a taller ceiling down into the room) then this is also something you need to think about carefully.

How much SHOULD I spend?

This is a tricky one as it depends on the size of your venue and the size of your bridal party. The average spend for flowers is around the £1,200.00 mark, although you can expect to pay a lot more depending on the size of the arrangement and the selection of flowers. Choosing flowers out of season (that need to be imported) will bump up costs, as will more technical arrangements or bouquets that involve wiring.

"This year has been a difficult one to comment on an average. I've had a lot of clients postpone their wedding until next year or just approach me for bridal work and nothing else. This year I have such polar opposites of client budgets with those spending just £75 for a single bride's bouquet to £3,000 for their whole day to be florally enhanced. I would say the average spend for a client wanting the whole package would be £700-£1,000."

You can expect a bridal bouquet to cost anything between £70-£150, buttonholes around £8-£10 and table arrangements anything from £50 upwards depending on the florist.

I've designed weddings with floral budgets smaller than £1,000.00 and they've been just as beautiful. Don't expect miracles-you get what you pay for. If you know you are working to a tight budget, let the florists you meet with know before they head off and write your quote. It'll help them to understand your needs, use the flowers that are the most cost effective and above all will stop you both wasting your time if the florist only works with larger budgets.

"A good florist will take the time and be able to help you stretch your pounds n' pence to cover areas that you long for and work them into your budget if you are honest with them about how much you can afford from the start. Actually talk between yourselves as a couple about what you think you want and if you haven't got a clue about costing and are really struggling to come up with a budget then speak to a florist ASAP, don't leave us as the last thing on your list as you may be shocked as to how much you need to raise in a short period of time."

How Do I Choose?

I always find it helps to pull together a scrapbook or mood board of flowers you love. It might be the shape of the bloom, the colour, the smell or the way a design has been put together.

Do your research. Find out what's in season around the time of your wedding.

Look at the colour scheme inside your venue. If the decor is neutral the world is pretty much your oyster, however if the space has a dominant colour scheme you'll need to be a little more careful with what you choose to compliment it.

Gayle describes her process...

" I compile a fully comprehensive break down of all arrangements that have been discussed with pictures of similar styles and colours and actual images of flowers that I am suggesting to be used for their day. I'm willing to meet with my clients as many times as is needed for their assurance and mine and to make sure we are all on the same page when it comes to setup and styling of the venue on the lead up to the day."

Why do flowers cost what they cost?

Well, there are several answers to that question.

"Tax is a big issue with the price of flowers at the moment as well as some crops failing due to weather related problems which had a knock on affect to the whole supply and demand chain."

Certain blooms are more expensive than others...

"Blooms such as hydrangeas are very large and when bought from Holland they will be cut and transported in water in a specially designed bucket and can fit only 10 stems in one whereas in the same bucket you can fit 80 stems of roses, so the hydrangea have a high distribution charge placed on them per stem than the roses which bumps their price up considerably."

"Around wedding season white flowers see a raise in price so I would say to brides to think outside the Kate Middleton all white box and think about being daring and colourful, you'll be surprised what you can get at a better price!"

Remember that the florist needs to factor in their labour-it takes time and skill to create beautiful arrangements. You're paying for their knowledge too.

What should I tell my florist?

The main points your florist will need to know at your consultation is

• The date of your wedding-the time of year will dictate what's available to work with.

• Whether you need arrangements for the ceremony, be it pedestals or pew ends.

• What your dress is like-this determines the style of bouquet best suited to your dress (although you can do no wrong with a hand-tied).

• How many bridesmaids you have and what their dresses are like.

• How many groomsmen you have and the number of buttonholes you need.

• If there are any female members of your family (mothers, grandmothers or aunts) who require a corsage.

• The number of tables you need to decorate at the reception.

• If there are any focal points at your reception venue that would benefit from a display (e.g. recesses and mantlepieces).

Ok, so it's quite a lot but worth thinking about before you get there.

I hope this has helped make the subject of flowers clearer and easier for you to approach when the time comes. Enjoy it-this is without doubt one of my favourite parts of the process!

Hopelessly In Love With...Belle De Sucre

There I was wondering my local John Lewis (there's a sale on you know) and my eyes settled on a rather sweet little box. So I picked it up and something inside me did an excited little skip. These are the SWEETEST (quite literally) little sugar treats I've ever seen in my life. Forget the crystalized sugar on a stick, these are to die for. I love that these are a beautifully understated way of customising your wedding meal, a delicate little detail to adorn your teacups in readiness for your afternoon tea or post dinner coffee and tea.

The Planner's Guide: Commission

I don't normally have enough time to blog on a regular basis these days, as much as I would like to, meaning that what gets posted has to be worth reading and worth my time to write. I've been meaning to start a series about the world of wedding planning for some time now and I hope it will help future clients and planners to better understand how employing or becoming one works.

My first piece focuses on commission, both charging and receiving it...

What Is Commission?

In simple terms, commission is a fee that is passed on when a booking is made via a personal recommendation. In the case of a wedding planner, certain suppliers will pass on a percentage of their booking fee when a client books with them. Generally this is around 10% of the overall fee.

In some cases a planner may have a specific list of suppliers on their books with which they have a contract of recommendation, guaranteeing them a "kick back" if their client chooses any one from their list.

Why Do Planners Charge Commission?

As with many jobs-from sales people to bankers, commission provides the planner with the incentive to work regularly with certain suppliers. It's the cherry on top as it were.

What Happens With This Fee?

I can't speak for all planners, but in my case I always pass this back to my clients as a discount if I'm offered anything. Of course, providing the fee isn't added on top of the client's bill, the planner is well within their rights to keep this fee, although it's not something I feel comfortable in doing. If it is added on top then it must be made clear. If you're looking for other planners who don't accept or charge commission the UKAWP has an extensive list and be sure to ask your planner when you first meet with them to make sure everything is completely transparent before you start.

Why Don't I Pocket This Fee?

I once sat through a Q&A session with a well established planner who claimed "how do you expect your business to make a profit if you don't charge commission"? It got my back up. In my opinion, if you feel the need to charge suppliers to work with you then perhaps you should re-evaluate what you charge your clients in the first place. The team you put forward to your brides should always be about what's best for her wedding, her style, her budget, and who is trustworthy not whether or not you can make a little extra profit on top. Perhaps I'm being controversial and I'm sure there'll be plenty of professionals who will disagree with me.

Finally, commission is not a bad thing and I don't condemn other professionals who choose to operate in this way. It is, however, important to ensure that if this is something you want to do that you make sure to make this very clear to your clients. If you're choosing to work with a planner don't be afraid to ask questions.
